I really hope the DPP proceeds aggressively with the mandate to investigate and prosecute that they have been given. More particularly against senior officers, in my view. If the SAPS wants to play the coverup game, then the senior officers who lied to the commission should be prepared to face the pressure of investigations and potential criminal liability. I would even go so far as to hold out the hope that if senior SAPS leaders were genuinely face with the possibility of jail time, the conspiracy might even begin to crack, and details of the night-before meeting where the decision to use violence was taken might even begin to leak out.

Re: Notes from the Marikana Commission Report

Also of interest is the legal challenge announced by the injured or families of decreased for a civil liability claim.

The courts will have to test the evidence, lack of evidence, and this report.

In any event the police officials did indeed kill protesters and financial compensation will likely succeed. There may be a finding of holding the minister personally responsible.

What will really be interesting if the courts make a finding that requires them to recommend prosecutors hold police officers petsonally accountable. This could be the officers who were shooting or the general who lost the only evidence of what happened in the critical meeting.

Re: From Cape to Cairo in a few simple steps

In the end, I think it was around $3k, including the flight back form Cairo. That a point where it becomes a rational, defensive reaction could exist seems fairly clear in principle. Whether one is actually there, and how one fights back so as not become a new oppressor, or then teaches that naked violence is not a solution as anything except in such particular, total circumstances - those are much harder questions.

Thanks for posting when you did though. Seriously. It was just the right push, at just the right time to get back into writing, and exit the pit of half-formed ideas.

Re: Not the Postcolony, Toto.

Hey Richard! I'm happy to see my post lead you to finish writing and post this!

Interesting points. It is difficult to define violence as acceptable. Violence as self defense? Perhaps. But violence to take back dignity seems like a potentially very blurry line, one that can easily slip into cruelty and oppression.

I don't have answers, but I am curious to see what you decide. I'm also curious to see your curriculum.

Re: The long, German Summer

I thought you might like the language-ness! In my own experience with German, when and where language began to click wasn't as important as having things begin to open up when I simply spoke and used my ever-imperfect handle of the language.
